Gentle Spinal Manipulation - The "Adjustment"
Spinal manipulation is a highly skilled treatment using the hands or an instrument to apply a quick, light, force to the spine, (neck and back) and should be done only by a professional with education and experience in manipulation. According to the US Department of Health & Human Services, Doctors of Chiropractic provide over 90% of the spinal manipulation in the US.
The term "adjustment" refers to the specific manipulation chiropractors apply to vertebrae and other joints of the human frame that have abnormal movement patterns or fail to function normally. Often times there is an audible 'pop' or 'click' associated with the adjustment. This sound, called a "cavitation," is caused by the release of oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide from the joint. Cavitation is a normal physiological event and does not hurt or cause damage to the joint.
The objective of chiropractic adjustments is to restore normal motion and alignment to the joints in the spine. When joints are aligned through gentle chiropractic adjustments, renewed balance to the muscles and the connective tissue in the joints often result in pain relief and improved flexibility. At the same time, reduced irritation to spinal and other nerves can result in additional beneficial changes such as greater overall wellness and increased energy.
