Nerve Conduction Velocity Test
Nerve Conduction Velocity (NCV) tests record the responses of sensory and motor nerves in the extremities to electrical stimulation. Studies show the condition of the motor portion of the peripheral nerve along with the distal sensory information. NCV tests are usually performed in conjunction with the EMG or EP. It is a good study to use when history and physical exam suggest a polyneuropahty, a motor radiculopathy and/or entrapment symptoms. NCV’s are extremely valuable in the diagnosis of peripheral nerve lesions, entrapment syndromes and several types of neuropathies.
NCVs aid in the evaluation of:
-Herniated Disks
-Peripheral neuropathies
-Numbness and tingling
-Pain in the extremities
-Atrophy
-Entrapment neuropathies
-Thoracic outlet syndrome
-R-adiculopathies
-Carpal tunnel syndrome
-Tarsal tunnel syndrome
-Trauma to nerves
-Motor/sensory deficits
-Hot/cold sensation
-Neuritis
-Abnormal skin sensation
-Nerve root compression
-Spinal cord tumor
-Spinal trauma or injury
-Cervicobrachial syndrome
-Thoracic outlet syndrome
-Multiple sclerosis
-Herniated discs
-Radiculopathy
-Neuritis
-Myelopathy
-Numbness and tingling
-Burning sensation
-Diabetes
-Plexopathy
Other tests to complement NCV:
- SS E P
- DEP
- EMG
- Musculoskeletal/Spinal Ultrasound
