Common Questions

We've provided answers to a number of commonly asked chiropractic questions. If you have a question that is not addressed here, please call us at (828) 299-4555. We look forward to resolving all of your chiropractic care concerns.

Q: What should I expect at my first visit?

A: At Chiropractic Family Practice, our examination procedures are geared toward detection and correction of the Vertebral Subluxation. The examination consists of a thorough spinal and nervous system exam which includes "Palpation". Palpation essentially is checking your spine by hand. With this exam the doctor can feel areas of your spine that may be involved with subluxation problems. Spinal position, curvatures and muscle tone can also be examined as it relates to possible spinal subluxations.

Your examination will also include a computerized examination called the bio-structural stress evaluation. This examination includes several important components. It determines the stress that is exerted on the spine which if it goes undetected leads to degenerative joint disease and stress on the nervous system. From this we can see how subluxation may be affecting these functions of your nervous system. The second part of the examination studies the balance and symmetry of your body. This examination helps scientifically understand the subluxation processes going on in your spine. It also gives us a baseline for future tests so we can accurately measure your progress to see how your spine is correcting and your nervous system is functioning.

Spinal X-rays may also be taken depending on your age and situation (pregnancy, children, recent usable x-rays, may negate the use of x-rays.). Your x-rays will help us determine your spine needs as well as the frequency of your care. You will be scheduled for your report of findings within a few days of your initial visit. This visit is your most important visit and may take up to one hour. We will give you a recommended care plan and go over any special instructions you will need to obtain the best and fastest possible results. Rest assured that Dr. Stockstad utilizes only the most modern and well-established chiropractic adjustive procedures and equipment available.

Q: How do I know if chiropractic care is right for me?

A: If you have pain in your neck, back or joints, if you've suffered a sports or work-related injury, or have been in an accident, chiropractic may be right for you. However, an exam by a licensed chiropractor is the only way to know whether or not chiropractic care can be of benefit to your particular complaint and health condition.

Q: Does every patient receive the same course of treatment?

A: Every patient presents a unique combination of pains, health history and state of wellness that requires personal attention and a personalized treatment plan. Doctors of Chiropractic (D.C.) thoroughly evaluate each patient and utilize a variety of therapies and procedures to customize a program of care best suited to the individual's health needs and goals.

Q: How long will my treatment program last?

A: The number of chiropractic treatments needed will vary by condition and stage of care. Initial treatments are designed to relieve pain and are usually more frequent. As in any healthcare practice, the severity of the ailment and the rehabilitation requirements will prolong treatment.

Q: Why are X-rays necessary?

A: X-rays are a common part of the examination process when looking for vertebral subluxations. X-rays give us important information including the position of the spinal bones, and the quality of the spine and safety of adjusting it. X-rays also tell us how long subluxations may have been involved in your spine. Most patients receive three spinal x-rays at the beginning of care.

Q: What are subluxations?

A: In simplest terms, a subluxation (a.k.a. Vertebral Subluxation) is when one or more of the bones of your spine (vertebrae) move out of position and create pressure on, or irritate spinal nerves. Spinal nerves are the nerves that come out from between each of the bones in your spine. This pressure or irritation on the nerves then causes those nerves to malfunction and interfere with the signals traveling over those nerves.

Q: Is chiropractic care covered by insurance plans?

A: According to the American Chiropractic Association (ACA), the majority of all insured American workers have coverage for chiropractic services in their health care plans. However, it is always wise to check with your employer, or insurer, or refer to your policy to learn what chiropractic benefits are specifically covered by your plan. We also make payment plans available to ensure affordability of our care for all.

Q: What education and training is required to become a chiropractor?

A: Doctors of Chiropractic endure rigorous training and testing similar to traditional medical programs. The chiropractic curriculum requires a bachelors degree followed by an additional 4-5 years to complete and requires no less than 4,200 hours of classroom, laboratory and clinical experience. Upon graduation, candidates are required to pass a demanding four-part National Board Examination. Doctors then apply to a governmental licensing board and fulfill additional testing requirements. And it doesn't stop there! Many doctors opt to pursue additional degrees, or diplomates, to enhance their knowledge and ability to provide specialized care in areas such as sports injuries, radiology, orthopedics, nutrition and neurology. At a minimum, Chiropractors must satisfy board-mandated continuing education requirements and keep their license in good standing to be eligible for renewal.
